Balshaw’s Church of England High School

Curriculum, Learning Week and Homework Timetable

The Curriculum

At Balshaw’s, we have always had a policy of making sure that our students take qualifications which are appropriate to them and which employers will value.  We ensure that the curriculum is right for the students and we don’t play games with our students’ futures to make results appear better in league tables.

The Learning Week

Students are taught for 25 hours per week over a two week timetable (one hour more than the DfE minimum).  They study a curriculum that is designed to be broad and balanced, adapted to suit individual needs when required. Students are taught in a combination of classes that are set by ability and classes that are mixed ability.

At KS3 students take 5 lessons of Science over two weeks & there may be some flexibility with days on which homework is set depending on units of work being covered.

At KS3 Music/Drama homework may be set on a flexible basis in line with and dependent upon performance pieces being rehearsed or prepared.

At KS3 Tech homework may be set on a flexible basis in line with and dependent upon practical work being undertaken and the commitment of bringing ingredients/materials in, etc.

Humanities homework will be set according to where the 2/3 lessons (subject specific) fall in week A and may be set over a two week period as an extended piece of homework or alternatively over a week as a smaller piece of home study.

Where lessons in core subjects are not mirrored in week B from week A classroom teachers will set an equivalent amount of homework as in week A.
