Science Club Trip to London
On Friday 30th June, the Year 7 and Year 8 Science Club students, went on a trip to London.
Year 10 Girls Achieve Third Place in the STEM Challenge Day
On Tuesday 16th May, four of our girls, Izzy, Milena, Teri and Victoria, travelled to Westholme School in Blackburn, with Mrs Holden, to compete in the STEM Challenge Day.
Balshaw's Students and Staff Visit The Big Bang Show
On Saturday 18th March, fifteen of our students and three members of staff made the exciting trip to see the Big Bang Show in Birmingham.
GCHQ Girls' CyberFirst Competition
Four girls from Balshaw’s have recently competed in the first ever GCHQ girls’ CyberFirst competition which involved over 8,000 girls and 2,100 teams across the UK.
UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge
During the week of the 7th November 2016, Year 9 students took part in the UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge.
Year 11 Students Visit Leyland Trucks
On Friday 23rd September a group of Year 11 visited Leyland Trucks as part of National Lorry Week.
GCSE Computer Science Students Visit Microsoft UK HQ!
On Tuesday 28th June, Mr Mort and Miss Lockhart took twenty-nine students from Year 10 GCSE Computer Science on a trip to visit the UK Headquarters of Microsoft in Reading!
Balshaw's Tennis Team at the South Ribble Competition

Robotics Challenge Champions
In June 2016, 10 of our Students went along to Preston College to take part in the Future Engineers Lego Robotics challenge for 2016.
Rhiannon Evans and Mr Spud are Champions!
Rhiannon Evans, in Year 9, competed in the Under 15 Lancashire Mounted Games from Friday 1st April until Sunday 3rd April.
On Wednesday 27th April 2016, Mr Mort took ten eager Year 8 students on a trip to TeenTech 2016.
Team Aftershock Triumph
Massive congratulations are in order to our talented STEM group, who won ‘Best Rookie Team’ on Tuesday 23rd February 2016, at the regional finals of the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge.
Peace Poster Success
Every year our Students submit poster entries to the Leyland and Cuerden Valley Lions competition. Our fabulous entries have been on display at the Leyland Civic Centre during the first week of February. One of our entries was chosen as the District winner for the fifth time over the last ten years.

Sixteen local schools from across Lancashire participated in the BAE Systems 'Make it Challenge' at Ribby Hall Village nr Kirkham.
Year 7 STEM Week

ZooLab Bring the Rainforest to Balshaw's!
ZooLab made their annual visit to the Year 8 Geographers on December 1st to give them the opportunity to see first hand how creatures have adapted to their environment in the world's tropical rainforests

Balshaw's Geography Department Success in Delivering the John Muir Award
Thanks to a lot of hard work and support of our Geography teachers last year, and all support staff in Year 7 Geography lessons, we have been able to maintain our success in delivering the John Muir Award to a second cohort of Year 7 students.
UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge
During the week of the 9th November 2015, Year 9 students took part in the UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. The Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge (BCTC) introduces computer science to students and is designed to get them excited about computing.
'MasterChefs' in the Making!
On Thursday 12th November 2015 two of our Students, Precious Hall and Christopher Cowpe, took part in the Rotary Chef of the Year Competition at Runshaw College. The competition is open to 14-16 year olds and is run by the Rotary Association.
Frightening Fairtrade Fun
The Eco and Fairtrade Group pulled out all stops to advertise the 'Spooky' event that was to take place on Thursday 22nd October 2015.
Year 7 Science Club Trip to Blackpool
In October our Year 7 Science Club took a trip to Blackpool. They visited the Zoo, the Tower, including the fabulous Tower Ballroom as seen on Strictly, the spooky Dungeons and even built a replica of the Tower in LEGO!
Farington WW1 Memorial Garden
On September 27th a memorial was dedicated to the young men of Farington who gave their lives in the defence of our country during the Great War.
Year 10 Geology Trip to North Yorkshire
Our Year 10 Geology students visited Ingleton Waterallls in North Yorkshire in July to immerse themselves in local geology.
Bletchley Park Educational Visit
On Friday 3rd July, Mr Mort, Miss Lockhart, Miss Chisholm and Mrs Elliott took a group of students from Year 9 and Year 10 on an educational visit to Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.
Year 9 Space STEM Week
In the summer of 2015 Year 9 students had an out of this world experience when they were involved in Space Week. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (the STEM subjects) led the way by offering a whole range of lessons based on the exploration of space.

STEM Girls Make National Finalists
Year 8 STEM club girls Olivia Foster, Jemma Gough, Madison Bolton, Heather Mulgrew, Eleanor Bird and Ruby Hill from Balshaws entered a national competition aimed at encouraging more girls into STEM subjects held by Talent 2030.
