“Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club” awarded Satellite Funding for next three years by Sport England!

Satellite Funding has been developed by Sport England to provide teenagers and young adults aged 11-25 years with the opportunity to experience sport in a community setting delivered by a local sports club which may act as a stepping stone into the club proper, or perhaps simply to enable them to continue to participate on a regular basis.

I submitted an application to Lancashire Sport Partnership in August 2014 who then submitted it to Sport England. Early last month Lancashire Sport Partnership informed me that our application for three years funding (£6,000) for both Squash and Racketball had been successful.

We are the first Squash & Racketball Club in Lancashire to be awarded the funding.

Quote from Fiona Callaghan Club Link Maker at Lancashire Sport Partnership “This is a fabulous opportunity for the young people of Leyland and the surrounding areas to try out a sport which is not normally offered at school. It’s an added bonus to be an indoor sport too. Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club has an incredible track record in getting young people into squash and racketball and helping them to create a sporting habit for life”.

Quote from Angela Cwaczko, England Squash & Racketball, Regional Manager for the North West of England “I am delighted to be working in partnership with Leyland Lions Junior Squash and Racketball Club and supporting their growth with the development of a satellite club, based at Leyland Leisure Centre. The club is very proactive and successful and to be an approved satellite club for the North West is all down to the hard work of John Gibson and his team. I look forward to working with John and Leyland Lions in the future”.

Without the great support of Lancashire Sport Partnership, England Squash & Racketball, and the staff at Leyland Leisure Centre, this would not have been possible – Thank You.

It will enable more young people in the local communities to participate in physical activity; Squash and Racketball being one the fittest sports played nowadays!

Our main aim is to provide more opportunities for pupils at High Schools and students at College.

All the sessions at Leyland will be delivered by Dave Scurlock a Level 3 Squash & Racketball Licenced Coach. Dave is an ex Spanish Teacher, is the Head of Junior Development for Squash & Racketball in Lancashire, and is the current National Over 65 Racketball Champion. Myself, served in her majesty’s Forces for 35 years, worked for England Squash & Racketball as the Regional Manager for the North West, am a member of the South Ribble Leisure Board Trust, and a member of the Lancashire Junior Squash & Racketball Committee.

All the Satellite sessions start week commencing Monday 16th March.

Note: Over the past couple of years we have been awarded Sportivate funding (Girls Racketball) from Lancashire Sport Partnership. Thanks to High Schools in South Ribble, especially Balshaws in Leyland, it’s been a great success. Some of the girls from Balshaw’s who attended the courses, they had never played the sport, are now attending the monthly Lancashire Junior Squash Coaching Sessions in Manchester! Setting up a “Leaders Course” soon for Girls from Balshaw’s High School which is the first step in them looking at coaching.
