On Wednesday 6th October, our Year 9 boys' football team travelled over to Manchester Grammar School, to play them in the second round of the English Schools Cup.

After the first few minutes it was clear that this was going to be a very competitive game of football, with two very strong footballing sides. Both schools set up quite defensively and at half time neither had been able to score. HT 0 - 0.

In the second half, both teams started well but it was Manchester Grammar who struck first after a poor clearance from the Balshaw's defence. 1 - 0

Balshaw's did not let their heads drop though and within 10 minutes they had equalised after a goal scramble and a tap in from Harvey T. 1 - 1

The game then remained tight with a number of key battles in the centre of midfield until Balshaw's managed to go ahead for the first time in the game. Josh R played a lovely through ball into James B who finished neatly for 2 - 1.

Manchester Grammar continued to fight, and the game still felt like it could go either way, until an unlucky mistake by the Grammar goalkeeper allowed James B in for his second goal of the match. 3 - 1.

At 3 - 1, Balshaw's simply had to continue to defend well to see out the game with 10 minutes remaining. In the final few minutes Balshaw's finished off the game completely, with a composed finish from Matthew J, assisted by Kudz G

Final score 4 - 1 to Balshaw's and an excellent performance from every player.

Onto the third round in the National Competition!

Mr Davidson.
