Year 7

Topic outline

At Balshaw’s all students in Year 7 will have three French lessons per week.

Students are taught in mixed ability groups.

In Year 7 students will study five modules using the ‘Expo one’ text book.

Students are also taught how to use classroom language to make sure that they use French as much as they can.

Module 1 “c’est parti”- covers the following topics:

  • Meeting people
  • School bag items
  • The alphabet
  • Numbers / age
  • Birthdays
  • Classroom items
  • Colours

Module 2 - “famille et copains” covers the following topics:

  • Talking about brothers and sisters
  • Talking about your family
  • Talking about your pets
  • Describing yourself and others
  • Talking about hair and eyes

Module 3 - “chez moi” covers the following topics:

  • Talking about where people live
  • Describing your home
  • Describing your bedroom
  • Talking about what you do in the evening
  • Telling the time

Module 4 - “on va en ville” covers the following topics:

  • Asking about places in the town
  • Asking for directions
  • Where you are and where you are going
  • Expressing opinions
  • Ordering drinks and snacks

Year 8

Topic Outline

In year eight our students have three French classes per week.

All students are placed in to ability sets as follows:
8X1, 8X2, 8X3, 8X4
8Y1, 8Y2, 8Y3, 8Y4.

Although all of our students follow the same scheme of work we try hard to ensure that all work is differentiated to the ability of the students.

In Year 8, classes are still taught in French to give the students as many opportunities as possible to be exposed to the language.

Scheme of Work

In Year 8 we follow the Expo course using books one and two.

We cover two modules from Expo 1 and two modules from Expo 2. Sets one and two use Expo 2 rouge, the rest of the sets use Expo 2 vert

GCSE French

At Balshaw’s we use the Edexcel exam board and study the linear course. We use the Expo 4 textbooks. These textbooks can be accessed by Module by using option 9 below.

The topics taught are split over Years 10 and 11.

Students complete two speaking assessments, one in Year 10 and one in Year 11 and two written assessments, one in Year 10 and one in Year 11.

Year 10

The first half of the GCSE is taught in year ten. This is made up of two modules and the following topics are covered:

Module 1 – Mon monde à moi

1A Self family and friends – personal details, alphabet, family, descriptions of people, jobs

1B Interests and hobbies – sports, pastimes, TV programmes, weather, animals

1C Home and local environment – types of house and location, rooms, own room, advantages / disadvantages of home, descriptions of region town

1D Daily routine – Weekdays and weekends, meals and mealtimes, pocket money, housework, part-time jobs

1E School and future plans – comparison of systems, uniform, subjects, opinions of subjects, plans for the future

Module 2 – Les vacances et les voyages

2A Travel transport and finding the way – means of transport, buying tickets, getting information, asking for / giving directions, asking for maps / timetables

2B Tourism – Different types of holiday, contacting the tourist office, booking places on excursions, describing a holiday in the past

2C Accommodation – campsite facilities, booking into a campsite, different types of hotel room, booking into a hotel, hotel facilities, making a complaint

2D Holiday activities – Ordering a snack, choosing a restaurant, booking a table, talking about the menu, ordering a meal, asking for the bill, making a complaint, comparing French / English food

2E Services – Changing money, sending a letter / package, at the chemist’s, common ailments, lost property, accident/ breakdown

Year 11

The second half of the GCSE French course is made up of modules 3 and 4. See below for the topics covered:

3A. Home life: Mealtimes and eating habits, helping at home, opinions, birthdays and special celebrations

3B. Healthy living: Comparing healthy / unhealthy lifestyles and diets, influence of TV

3C. Part time jobs: Different types of weekend / summer jobs, means of transport, interviews, phoning about a job, leaving / taking phone messages

3D. Leisure time: Invitations, arranging to meet, weather, opinions on TV programmes / types of films, local events

3E. Shopping: Shops, buying food / souvenirs / buying clothes, spending habits

Module 4 - Les jeunes en société

4A. Character and personal relationships: Personal qualities, family relationships, arguments, marriage and children

4B. The Environment: Conservation issues, recycling, advantages/disadvantages of areas, reasons for pollution and solutions, disappearing wildlife

4C. Education issues: Types of school, subjects, rules, teachers, schoolbooks, comparisons between countries, likes and dislikes

4D. Careers and future plans: Preferred jobs, travel plans, marriage / family, lifestyles of the future

4E. Choices and responsibilities: Healthy lifestyles, smoking, drugs, alcohol, social issues
